The Capannaccio Coal Mine was open from 1790 to 1942. Many people are unaware that three important mines were active in Sogliano as early as the 18th century: in addition to the one located in Capannaccio, there was one in Montegelli and one in Montetiffi. These mines constituted an indispensable economic resource for the local people and greatly influenced local history. The Sogliano Mines Association was established with the intention of keeping the memory of this page of history alive; to this end it has opened the Mining Museum in Sogliano, which includes minerals, old publications, old manuscripts, typical equipment used by miners, and an exhibition of period photographs.
