On top of the cliff is the ancient Benedictine Abbey of San Leonardo, one of the most important Romanesque monuments in Emilia-Romagna for its antiquity and preservation. It was built of tanned stone in the mid-11th century by the people of Montetiff and donated to the monks of St. Benedict, who lived here following the motto “Ora et labora.” Of the ancient monastery complex today remains the church flanked by a massive bell tower, 21 meters high. The entrance hall, which retains its primitive vaulted design, houses a 17th-century baptismal font. The interior is rich in works of art: important frescoes of the 14th-century school (depicting Saints Leonard, patron of the town, dressed in dalmatic, Benedict, patron of the Benedictine order, John the Baptist, Judith and Scholastica) can be seen in a niche and in the sacristy of the presbytery; there are also interesting 14th-century epigraphs. From all around the church one can admire a vast and pleasant landscape, such as the peculiar rocky conformation of Mount Aquilone (Perticara). Inside the ancient rectory of Montetiffi is the museum “Agostino Venanzio Reali Art and Poetry,” established in 2004 and communicating with the Abbey of St. Leonard. The permanent exhibition provides a path through the entire artistic production of Agostino Venanzio Reali: the sketches, paintings, terra cottas, poems, Bible studies and translations. It is possible to visit both the Abbey of St. Leonard and the attached Museum “Agostino Venanzio Reali Art and Poetry.”
