In Piazza G. Mazzini, on the initiative of the Compagnia del Suffragio, around 1679 this church was built with a compass entrance and an original wooden altarpiece, as well as the organ balustrade. Notable works of art can be seen inside: “The Baptism of Christ,” an oil-on-canvas painting depicting Jesus and John the Baptist, attributable to the school of Guercino; an anonymous canvas from before 1520 representing the “Madonna of the Spasimo,” with Christ laid over the tomb, Mary Cleophe, Mary Martha and, later, Magdalene (it is the oldest painting in Sogliano); the “Statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel”; and a beautifully crafted wooden crucifix, dating back to the 18th century; “The Holy Family with the Purgatory Souls,” dating from the mid-18th century, enclosed in a gilded wooden frame; a polychrome scagliola altar frontal depicting the souls of purgatory, dated 1713, of Romagna art (the work of scagliolists of the Verucchio school); the “Madonna of the Vineyards,” an altarpiece by an anonymous artist, dated 1575, depicting Saints Macarius (the beggar with the saddlebag) and Rochus (the pilgrim with the staff); and a pair of painted wooden chests dating from the 19th century. The attached Civic Tower towering over the village dates from 1867.
