GIUSEPPE GARIBALDI (1807 – 1882)

Great Italian general, patriot, leader and writer, one of the most celebrated historical figures of the Risorgimento.
In 1849, during his march to northern Italy, pursued by Austrian troops, Garibaldi and his men are intercepted at sea at Comacchio. Thus began the “trafila romagnola,” an adventurous escape through the countryside and hills of Romagna, where he found salvation thanks to the help of the local people, peasants and patriots.
He arrived in Sogliano al Rubicone on August 1, 1849, and found hospitality here, among all others, from Claudio Sabattini, a great Soglianese patriot.
Garibaldi’s passage to Sogliano al Rubicone is celebrated by an epigraph preserved inside Palazzo Mariani, seat of the town hall, next to the plaque dedicated precisely to Sabattini.
At the Linea Christa museum in Sogliano al Rubicone, Garibaldi-era relics are preserved.
