Montepetra, a village suspended in time, enjoys a position overlooking the Savio River valley down to the sea, and the entire Apennine slope that surrounds it. Guarding the small village of Montepetra are the “Saxons” open-air archaeological site, sedimentary rocks composed of sand, gravel, debris and fossil shell remains. Inside the hamlet is The 15th-century Church of San Lorenzo, which preserves two altarpieces by Nicola Versari, dated 1658, and a fine baptismal font from 1495, a small jewel of Renaissance sculpture. At Montepetra Bassa there are the remains of a sulfur spring, while at Romagnano, an ancient Mistedia bears witness to anapparition of the Virgin Mary that occurred, according to tradition, in 1563. The site is a pilgrimage destination. Montepetra and the Barbotto (the nearby hill) are now a point of attraction for bicycle tourists from all over Italy and Europe.
