At the entrance to the small town of Montepetra it is possible to admire the so-called “Saxons,” sedimentary rocks composed of sand, gravel, debris, and the remains of animal and plant organisms.
Geologists believe that their formation dates back to the Cenozoic era (about 50 million years ago). The special feature of the “Saxons” is the presence of fossil shells in them.
