Pathway:

The Centennial Hazel Trail is one of the most striking itineraries of the Sogliano hiking circuit, the route is 6.3 km for an elevation gain of 261 meters and a 2-hour walking time. You walk on the pre-Apennine hills located on the borders of Montefeltro. Departure from the square of Savignano di Rigo, located near the Church of St. Matthew.
Following the 111f route in the direction of the sports field, we pass the highest point of the Sogliano territory: “Poggio Ciuffa” (615 m) and continue along the stretch of road that represents one of the southernmost points of the Municipality of Sogliano al Rubicone. At the fork in the road we turn right taking 111h that with a steep descent will lead us to the edge of the Rio Caffano. The ascent begins with path 123e that leads us to the small church of Lucignano.

The route (trail 123e) touches the locality Aia Bella, where Decio Raggi’s birth house is located. Next to the house stands a centuries-old hazel tree (Corylus Colurna or Constantinople Hazel) as tall as 25.30 m and with a circumference at the trunk of 3.62 m. According to current knowledge it appears to be, among the officially reviewed trees of this species, the tallest hazel tree in the world. The width of the crown and the circumference of the trunk testify that the tree is also extremely old, certainly one of the oldest in the world among all known specimens of Corylus Colurna. It is currently in good health. The final part of the trail grazes the cemetery of Savignano di Rigo (Trail 111g and 111f) and then arrives at the starting point. Here you can visit the grave of Decio Raggi, the first World War I gold medalist for military valor. Also resting in the cemetery is Gregorio Buda, grandson of Decio Raggi, who perished heroically during World War II. The Christa Line Museum in Sogliano collects various artifacts that tell their story.
