Pathway:

The Leonardo Da Vinci Trail has a length of 7.1 km and does not present particular difficulties, apart from a couple of somewhat steep descents. Total walking time is calculated at 2 h 10m.
The historic center holds some unique architectural beauties such as Tonino Guerra’s “Fountain of Butterflies” in Piazza Matteotti and Ilario Fioravanti’s “Girl with Book” in Via xx Settembre. Before setting off on the trail, we recommend visiting the “Leonardo da Vinci and Romagna Museum,” which is dedicated to the trip Leonardo made to Romagna in 1502. The museum is located in the Palazzo della Cultura, which houses other permanent exhibits that are also worth seeing: the “Museum of the Christa Line,” the “Permanent Exhibition of the Musical Record and Recording,” and the “Collection of Arte Povera.” Within the boundaries of the historic center, the MUSO – Museum of the Subsoil, the “Veggiani Collection,” the old icehouse, the mining museum and the characteristic Sogliano DOP cheese pits are also usable. We recommend reservations for the above-mentioned places.

We initially set out toward the municipal sports field along CAI trail No. 115 heading toward the Uso River. A natural curtain of reeds leads to a forest characterized by the presence of black pine, ancient oaks, elder trees and various blackberry plants, whose fruits, in the right season, are a comfort to wayfarers. When you reach the valley, you skirt the provincial road to the right for a stretch and almost immediately begin the fairly challenging, if short, ascent to Sogliano al Rubicone. We arrive at S. Donato di Vignola Park, in which there are two “concavities,” made according to Leonardo’s drawings: these are conical hollows dug into the ground that in ancient times were used by shepherds to amplify the sounds of their horns, thus being able to communicate at great distances. Inside the park we also point out the Tempietto di San Donato, an ancient oratory now dedicated to peace. Leaving the park and reaching the nearby Church of Vignola, one easily notices, close to an escarpment a beautiful, centuries-old Roverella, 18 m high and with a circumference at the base of 3.4 m. The last stop is at the large Vitruvian Man artifact, also made based on Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings before entering the town of Sogliano al Rubicone.
