Pathway:

This route, with a length of 9.7km, is quite challenging for some points with a strong elevation gain. The expected walking time is 3h and 15m. It starts from the historic center of Sogliano al Rubicone, which holds some unique architectural beauties such as Tonino Guerra’s “Fountain of Butterflies” in Matteotti Square and Ilario Fioravanti’s “Girl with Book” in Via xx Settembre. We recommend visiting some of the interesting permanent exhibitions set up at the Palace of Culture: the “Permanent Exhibition of the Record and Musical Recording,” the “Collection of Arte Povera,” the “Leonardo da Vinci and Romagna Museum,” the “Christa Line Museum,” Within the confines of the historic center, we also point out the MUSO – Museum of the Subsoil, the “Veggiani Collection,” the ancient icehouse, the Mining Museum and the Fosse di Fossa Cheese Pits of Sogliano DOP. Reservations are recommended for the above-mentioned places.

We leave Sogliano behind us and walk on path 115d in the direction of Curto/Strigara, where, inside a traffic circle is the sculpture of the Vitruvian Man, made to the design of Leonardo da Vinci: a celebrated representation of the ideal proportions of the human body, it demonstrates how it can be harmoniously inscribed in the two “perfect” figures of the circle and the square. From here begins a gradual ascent to Curto. Having passed this locality, on the right, a detour (115c) is encountered from the main path, which makes it possible to shorten the route considerably, at the price, however, of giving up the beautiful panoramic views of Passo dei Meloni. Passing through the first detour, in particular, it is possible to see the entrance to the old Capannaccio Coal Mine, open from 1790 to 1942. Staying on the longer route, however, leads to the Sorgenti del Rubicone, an excellent place for a break.
Taking Trail 115 from here, you will reach the Passo dei Meloni, the view sweeping from the Apennines to the Romagna Riviera; travelers, following this well-known ridge, will encounter the Sorgente dell’Urgone, after which they will descend on Trail 115a toward Motta and take the steep climb of Vallino with Trail 115 to reach Sogliano al Rubicone.
