Just below the historic center of Rontagnano is preserved the Public Washhouse. The short path immersed in greenery that leads to the area called “La Fonte” was entirely cobbled and now a few strips remain as evidence of this. Arriving at the end one encounters a pleasant little house attached to a deep well that in the early twentieth century pushed water all the way to the storage located next to the Casa del Fascio. With the war the pumps stopped but the washhouse remained in use. The wash-house is located a little further down and is reached by a short flight of stone steps. The washhouse has a regular square base structure and the work surface shows 20 soap dishes (a large washhouse for a formerly heavily inhabited village). The washhouse is surrounded on the two upstream sides by a small stone wall (paved with large stones that probably constituted the washhouse before the 1925 work) from which the overflow from the well flows naturally and the washhouse remains continuously fed. A few years ago two large poplars collapsed on the washhouse, fortunately without damaging it, and together with ivy and brambles created an impregnable sarcophagus that to this day hides but preserves the washhouse.
