Pathway:

The itinerary measures 6.9 km and has an elevation gain of 381 meters; it is easily covered in 2h 25m. It starts from Montepetra Alta, after leaving the car in the large parking lot located near the well-known “Saxons of Montepetra”: large sedimentary rocks composed of sand, gravel, remains of animal and plant organisms. Geologists believe that their formation is very ancient, dating back several million years. In the “Saxons” there are large fossil shells that attract tourists and researchers.
Montepetra is a location that offers splendid views and a frequent destination for cyclists seeking enchanting natural scenery. At the top of the promontory, the town retains traces of the walls of the ancient castle built in the 12th century; there are still wells and cisterns dug into the rock that were once used to store water and food. The Church of San Lorenzo, dating from the 15th century, preserves two altarpieces by Nicola Versari dated 1658 and a valuable baptismal font from 1495, a jewel of Renaissance sculpture.

The circuit is pleasant and does not have particularly challenging inclines. Leaving Montepetra Alta arriving at its highest point, take the path counterclockwise (path 123f ) and descend in the direction of the Savio River, crossing a small forest. Arriving in the valley remaining on path 123f, we alternate between paved road and path for a particularly impressive walk in places. The route leads us to a junction where remaining on the road but with 111h takes us back to the starting point. At the point where the trail leaves the road to turn back toward Montepetra Alta, we can see on the right the restored Montepetra washhouse, a “place of memory,” a meeting point of yesteryear. Currently, cyclists seeking refreshment stop there.
