It was on May 3, 1612 when by notarial deed it was decided by Guidi Simone da Meleto di Rontagnano to build a small church: the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed and Ever Virgin Mary of Meleto; the Madonna is called of Meleto because it stands on the mountain called Meleto, the exact title however is S. Maria Assunta Paradisi di Meleto, where Paradisi is due to the toponym of the ancient estate on which the Church originally stood. In 1830 the original Church of Meleto collapsed and was immediately rebuilt in its present location in 1831 thanks to the money and will of the Tontini family: elegance and architectural majesty are only in the things of creation, up here the sensational is given by the rediscovery of linearity and simplicity of construction. Interesting to note that while the Meleto Church continues to be dedicated to the Annunziata, the people of Rontagnan celebrate with “pious devotion” on August 15: having the feast of the Annunziata on March 25 on Mount Meleto in cold (and often snowy) weather was not the same as celebrating on August 15 when Mount Meleto is a true “paradise.”
