Savignano di Rigo is the birthplace of Decio Raggi (first gold medalist for military valor in World War I) and his grandson Gregorio Buda (who perished heroically during World War II) whose remains are housed in the cemetery. Bishop Antonio Tani, Archbishop of Urbino from 1932 to 1953, celebrated the first Mass in the central Church of St. Matthew. A short distance from the center, in the locality of “L’aia” is the “Centennial Hazel Tree of Savignano di Rigo (Corylus Colurna L.), has a height of 25 m. and a circumference of 3.53 m. It is an interesting case of an atypical hazel tree, which lacks the characteristics of the species, i.e. the typical shrubby forms with many stems and suckers at the base.
