We start from the Farneto Church, an ancient oratory dedicated to Our Lady, built in 1574 with the function of a “hospice” for the rest of wayfarers and pilgrims. Our Lady of the Farneto was venerated by sailors, who sailing through the Adriatic Sea, surprised by a storm, would turn their eyes to the familiar silhouette of Mount Farneto (500 meters above sea level) to get their bearings and return to port, asking for protection. Near the church stands the Farneto Oak, a prized monumental tree, for more than two centuries. Twenty-two meters tall with a circumference at the base of 3 meters, it constitutes, together with a group of other ancient oaks (or farnias, hence the name “Farneto”) the remnant edge of a forest that was once extensive.
