Tempo percorrenza indicativo (a piedi): 1h 45m

Distanza: 4,3 km

Dislivello: 304 m

Pathway:

Route of 4.3 km with an elevation gain 304 m that is completed in 1h 45m walk. Departure from the village of Montetiffi, included within the SCI Montetiffi, Alto Uso, a protected naturalistic area of about 1,400 hectares, characterized by the presence of downy oaks, manna ash, junipers, holm oaks and field elms. Montetiffi is known for being the town of pan making, an art handed down for many generations. On the top of a cliff stands the thousand-year-old Abbey of St. Leonard, built by the people of Montetiffi in the 11th century and donated to the Benedictine monks. It is one of the most important Romanesque monuments in Emilia-Romagna; inside are preserved 14th-century frescoes, a 17th-century baptismal font and 14th-century epigraphs. A short distance away, the “Agostino Venanzio Reali Museum-Art and Poetry,” which collects the works of Reali, a biblical scholar, painter, poet and sculptor, can be visited by appointment. This singular “artist of faith” rests in the small cemetery of Montetiffi, which we would meet at the beginning of our hiking trail.

The first part on Trail 111b is downhill in the direction of the Uso Creek where there are some easy fords. Once downstream, the ascent begins. In this area, if one is lucky, from mid-March to the end of May it is possible to observe specimens of Zerynthia Cassandra, a rather rare butterfly whose nurse plant (Aristolochia rotunda) is present in the nature area. The ideal place for a stop is the Romanesque Bridge area, which is one of the most fascinating points of the trail. Built with a round arch around the year 1000 AD, in the past it was an important link between Romagna and Montefeltro, also used for smuggling gunpowder, tobacco, cognac and mistrà. Next to the bridge are the remains of the old Tornani Mill. Here the stream preserves corners of rare beauty, characterized by the presence of jumps and small waterfalls and the so-called “Marmitte dei Giganti,” suggestive gorges formed over the centuries by the abrasive action of pebbles and that give the landscape a “lunar” character. The ascent to Montetiffi is made via the “Via della rupe”(015a), an ancient path carved into the rock, steep and difficult, once used by the women of the village for water supply and to go to wash clothes at the river.
