THE FILM
With “I Mastri”, De Michele continues to study the Italian tangible and intangible heritage through an anthropological approach. After food, he scoured Italy for ten years in search of artisans scattered throughout the peninsula, telling of their strenuous resistance to the spirit of the time that would like them close to extinction. Six Masters build their artifacts starting from raw material: earth, wood, glass and stone. They transform and shape it through the power of natural elements: water, fire and air. Two alabasters from Volterra, a young Neapolitan luthier, clay pan makers in Romagna, a drum maker on the slopes of Vesuvius, a Senegalese boy learning to make glass and Murano, a Venetian shipwright. The work leads them to observe the changing world, the closure of workshops, mass production and the end of the transmission of knowledge. Everything is summed up in an ephemeral and symbolic work that every year, for centuries, has been built with pruned wood in Novoli, Salento. A metaphor for the myth of Sisyphus, of the stone that continues to rise despite everything, because the masters, tenacious and proud, remain to resist the elements and defend the eternity of their knowledge. If masters disappear, products do not disappear, worlds disappear.
