We have become accustomed to reading wars in geopolitical terms. But when it comes to understanding what our heart of darkness is really made of, literature can also help us. From Genesis to the Iliad, from Leo Tolstoy to Svetlana Aleksievič, from Simone Weil to Elsa Morante, Nicola Lagioia retraces 2500 years of literature trying to read our destructive (and self-destructive) attitude not only as a problem linked to the contexts in which war clashes mature from time to time, but as a disease of the species to which we belong.
