The Tour de France 2024 will start in Italy. So on Saturday, June 29, 2024, the 111th edition of the Grande Boucle will start from Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence with a stage that will end 205 kilometers later in Rimini, on a day that will pay homage to the two Tuscan riders capable of winning the Yellow Jersey, Gino Bartali and Gastone Nencini. A tribute to the Italian winners of the Tour will continue the following day with the 200-kilometer Cesenatico-Bologna in honor of the Pirate Marco Pantani, while Fausto Coppi will be remembered in the Piacenza-Torino (225 kilometers), which will cross the province of Alessandria and touch the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato before arriving in the Piedmontese capital, and with the fourth and final day on Italian roads, which from Pinerolo (site of one of the Campionissimo’s best-known exploits) will then take the caravan to France.

Route Grand Départ Tour de France 2024
100 years after the first final success at the Tour by an Italian, Ottavio Bottecchia, the Grande Boucle 2024 will start with a stage that will already propose a significant elevation gain (3800 meters) and that will require the men in the rankings to be ready immediately. In fact, as many as seven GPMs will be faced during the day, the first, the Valico Tre Faggi, some 50 kilometers after the start from Florence. Instead, in the last 70 kilometers (of the total 205), four climbs will be faced in quick succession, the last of which will lead to the top of the hill (and trespassing) in San Marino, from where it will be 25 kilometers to the finish in Rimini. It is here that the first Yellow Jersey of the 111th edition of the Grande Boucle will be awarded.

The following day, however, the riders will also face several difficulties, albeit with a lower overall elevation gain than in the opening stage. Six GPMs are scheduled in the 200-kilometer Cesenatico-Bologna, which in the last 60 will again offer four climbs: decisive will be the double passage on the tough San Luca climb, where the Giro dell’Emilia ends every year and which in 2019 had hosted the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia. The finish of this second day, however, will not be at the top of the climb but in the city center, 12 kilometers after the last climb.

After two rather eventful days, it will instead be the sprinters who will play for victory at the end of the long Piacenza-Turin, which in total will measure 225 kilometers. From Emilia-Romagna they will then proceed to Piedmont (also touching Lombardy), initially crossing the Po Valley and then the Langhe and Monferrato, past which they will head towards the Piedmontese capital. There are few difficulties in this stage, which will offer only three short GPMs and will therefore be the preserve of fast wheels.

The caravan will then move on to Pinerolo on the fourth day, which will take the peloton into France with a yet-to-be-determined stage to tackle the rest of the Tour, which will conclude three weeks later with the already announced final time trial from Monaco to Nice (another historic first for the transalpine race).
