Notes on returns and intruders A compest conversation from the new book, with a few songs underneath Human beings have always lived side by side with animals. With some, even, we have coexisted for millennia. In contrast, since our society has become more urban and industrial, we have almost lost contact with those we call wild. Of their presence, even when we frequent the same spaces, we often do not even notice. The world they inhabit, however, is also ours, and man’s influence on the environment around him has led to enormous changes, even for those animals that, to man, escape. Even in our territory we can find countless allochthonous animals, that is, intruders, inserted more or less by force into an environment that was not theirs with different and unpredictable consequences on the ecosystem, but also on the economy of entire countries and regions. In addition to this we experience with increasing evidence a series of unexpected returns. Wild animals that we thought had disappeared forever from our parts have returned to inhabit them, taking advantage of the depopulation of mountain and rural areas or adapting to new contexts. In Bestiario selvatico Massimo Zamboni goes in search of these animals and the people who deal with them. He observes and recounts them, aided by Stefano Schiaparelli’s drawings, with the passion of the naturalist, the keen eye of the artist and the pen of the great writer, transforming their stories into a metaphor for our living. Massimo Zamboni was born in Reggio nell’Emilia in 1957. He is a musician, songwriter and writer. He was guitarist and composer of the Italian punk rock group CCCp and Csi. He has published: Emilia parabolica. Qua una volta era tutto mare (2002); Il mio primo dopoguerra. Chronicles on the Rubble: West Berlin, Beirut, Mostar (2005); In Mongolia in Reverse (2009); Technical Trials of Resurrection (2011); The Echo of a Gunshot (2015). Floating Souls. From the Plain to the Sea Cutting through the Fields (with Vasco Brondi, La nave di Teseo, 2016); Nessuna voce dentro. Un’estate a Berlino occidentale (2017), La macchia mongolica (2020), La trionferà (2021) and, together with Giovanni Lindo Ferretti, Il libretto rozzo di CCCP e CSI (2022).
With Notturni nel Bosco (Nocturnes in the Woods ), Sogliano’s theatrical activity moves to wooded places, along nature trails, on the evening’s doings. An activity that intends to combine theater and natural landscape in extemporaneous places of great charm, where the performance is immersed in nature, creating a strong suggestion: artists and spectators immersed in nature and in the silence of the woods. Performances of theatrical storytelling or in music, for a heterogeneous audience with a ritual prelude: in fact, spectators are invited to give themselves a rendezvous at an established meeting place, from which then at dusk they leave for a short walk through the natural paths of the Sogliano landscape to reach the performance venue. Over the years we have learned to “carefully digress” around the theme of theatrical storytelling: for us theater is what happens in the place where artists and spectators gather together. We have built and consolidated theatrical activity in its traditional place: the E. Turroni. But over the years we have also promoted and brought theater to more informal places: Sogliano and its natural landscape as a diffuse theater. Our proposal tends to promote live performance in the places of the natural landscape of the Sogliano area. In each case, the overall context is rural and vegetal in nature, both for the short walk (with the help of GAE guides when required) and for the performance venue.
